DEC Software's Protection Rationale

We wanted our customers to be able to download and use software quickly.
Many of our customers desired to download and try our programs immediately, without the time and expense of shipping. Thus we began protecting our full-version software and sending download and activation information to our customers.

We didn't want cheaters to be able to purchase one program license and install the software on multiple computers.
We have documented evidence of a school that purchased one program and then installed the program on over 40 machines (so they paid $49.95, and proceeded to pirate or steal over $2000 in software). We don't believe that this is fair to DEC Software, which has spent many hours in development of the software.

The days of purchasing a program and installing that program on any and all computers is gone. Currently, the newest Microsoft Windows Vista (and formerly Windows XP), allows the user to install and register the software on only one machine. If a user wishes to put it on a second machine, he/she must pay the entire retail price for the second machine. We have compromised, when a user decides to put the software on multiple machines, we allow that user to purchase additional unlocking codes (or licenses) at a significantly reduced price.

We are not trying to be unreasonable. We are only trying to protect the investment of thousands of hours of programming code, development, advertising and support.
